Can I Play?  … Is an inspiring story of a motivated athlete who faces her deepest hopes, dreams, and fears.

The story is about Keli Stennes, a high school junior who lives in a small town outside the city. Her family is like most having lived there for generations. Her late father Butch Stennes died in a logging accident when Keli was 3. She has heard all the stories of her legendary father who led the town to state championships and it’s what the townspeople still talk about today.
Since her father died it’s been only her and her mom, Cindy. Keli’s mother has worked at the local restaurant since Butch’s death nearly 13 years ago. The two, struggle barely making it by living on minimal wages and tips.  Keli, like her father, is now the town superstar. She is driven by her dream of earning a scholarship and going to college. She knows there is little chance to pay for it and perhaps deep down she is trying to fulfill her father’s dream, too.
In the summer before her junior year, Keli and her mom scrape up enough money to send her to a volleyball camp in the city. There she finds a whole new world of volleyball that far exceeds her raw talents. Depressed, she comes home wondering now if she will ever accomplish her goal.
A surprise visit from a friend (Ashley) she made at the camp shows up at her house and tries to convince her to come to school in the city. The idea gives Keli an option on how to still achieve her dream. After long discussions with her mom and her grandfather, she decides to leave behind the sanctuary of her life long friends and her school to try and make it.
Her secure world crumbles almost immediately when she has to tell her friends that she is changing schools. She completely under estimates their extreme negative reaction. Most won’t talk to her any more. Adding to her dismay after trying out at her new school she is put on the JV team.
The ridicule from her home town is almost too much to bear, if not for her new friend, Ashley, she might have quit. What Keli doesn’t know is their bond has ties to both the past and the future.
Her new coach believes in Keli’s goal and so does her mom who must stand up to the townspeople who are angered at both her and Keli for their decision.
It’s truly a book for the whole family. Players, coaches and parents have been thrilled with the motivational and inspiring story.

As an athlete, i can fully relate to most of this book.  I do live in a smaller town, yet not quite as small as Falls City.  This is a very inspiring novel that would be great for all female athletes to read.  My volleyball coach ordered these books and gave them to both the JV and Varsity teams.  I can't wait to read the sequal:  We Can Play!... I bet it will be just as inspiring as the first one.

Every athlete, parent, and coach should read, "Can I Play?".  The story is heartwarming, inspirational, and educational.  My teen daughters and I are looking forward to the sequel.

Great book for my daughter (freshman playing varsity)(VERY STRESSFUL)- it opened her eyes and motivated her to see herself at a new level.  She is trying to figure out a way to get her coach to read the book and has passed it along to fellow teammates  hoping to unify the team.  She is now reading WE CAN PLAY and passing on the information in it to fellow team mates as well.  They all can't wait for her to finish it so they can read it.
Great way to present important information within a wonderful story line.
